A Chartered Accountant with ten years in finance, working with businesses that are usually told they’re too small to matter. I don’t think that’s true, and I’ve built Accainga around not believing it.
I trained at EY, doing my audit and accountancy training while studying with ICAS at the same time. My specialism there was technology companies — which is where I first learned that the businesses with the most interesting numbers often have the least conventional records.
From there I moved to KLA as their senior internal auditor, auditing across the globe. Then into start-ups: Audit Manager at Financial Progression, specialising in contract audits, before joining FitXR — a video game start-up — as Finance Manager and then Financial Controller.
Accainga came next. I started working for myself, and almost immediately found myself working with crypto companies — the kind of problem most practices were turning away. That was two years ago, and it has become the thing I’m known for.
The thread through all of it is the same: most financial problems are really process problems wearing a disguise. Accainga is a consultancy where a sole trader and a token-holding company get the same standard of work, because the underlying discipline doesn’t change with the size of the business.
Ainga was the family business. It was meant to be aiga — Samoan for family — but somebody misspelled it on the paperwork, and Ainga it stayed. There have been several spin-offs since, and mine is one of them.
Accainga is accounting and Ainga together. It keeps the family name in the business, which matters to me, and it says what the business actually does.
The happy accident is in the middle. CA — Chartered Accountant — sits there without anyone having to put it there. I only noticed after I’d chosen the name.
If something is a bad idea, or better handled by a regulated firm, you will hear that first rather than a quote.
